Liberty and the Limits of Self-Ownership
ABSTRACT
This colloquium examined the nature of property rights as they relate to the self. What is property and how do conceptions of self-ownership derive from conceptions of property and property rights? What does it mean to conceive of self-ownership as a property right, and what are the implications for the individual and for the society thinking of institutionalizing self-ownership as a property right? What are the limits of self-ownership with regard to an individual’s use of self? In what ways are rights of self-ownership compatible with civil society?
