Political Theory

Liberty and Statism in Latin America

ABSTRACT

After their independence, the new Latin American republics entered a long period of civil wars and attempts to organize stable institutions that would guarantee progress and civil liberties. Classical liberalism became one of the most influential currents of thought. Unfortunately, different forms of authoritarianism and state interventionism replaced liberalism as a model of government for most of the twentieth century. This colloquium explored the reasons for this change, as well as its consequences for the future of liberty in the region.
