Political Theory
Liberty and Responsibility in Isabel Paterson’s “The God of the Machine”
ABSTRACT
Published in 1943, Isabel Paterson’s (1886–1961) book, The God of the Machine, is a sophisticated exposition of free markets, individual responsibility, constitutional structures, and the fallacies of interventionism. The book was her first opportunity to flesh out a systematic political, constitutional, and economic philosophy, and she made the most of it. This conference invited conferees to consider her political and economic theories, as well as the aptitude of her engineering/architecture metaphor.
