Literature
Liberty and Modernity in Thomas Mann’s “The Magic Mountain”
ABSTRACT
This colloquium explored the political and philosophical ramifications of the main themes in Thomas Mann's masterpiece, The Magic Mountain (1924). The intense exchanges in the novel between champions of liberal humanism on the one hand, and different collectivist doctrines on the other, reflect Mann's own political transformation and was the main focus of the conference.
