Anna Schwartz

In one of the most long-lasting and influential careers in economics, Anna Schwartz has made profound contributions to statistics, economic history, monetary policy, and international monetary arrangements.

Coauthor with Milton Friedman of A Monetary History of the United States, 1867–1960, Schwartz transformed our understanding of the causes of the Great Depression and radically altered our outlook on the effects of monetary policy. Born in 1915, a graduate of Barnard and Columbia, she has worked at the National Bureau of Economic Research in New York City since 1941.

In conversation with Bill Jersey, Schwartz reflects on a lifetime of first-hand experiences in economics, offering critical insights on the policies of Roosevelt and Reagan, Milton Friedman, and the recession of 2008.
